Off-leash | Point-to-point walk | Distance: 65 kms | Difficulty: Easiest

Te Awa River Ride is a shared path for walkers, bike riders and dogs and follows the Waikato River between Ngāruawāhia and Karapiro.

The concrete track is easy to walk, with enough space for people to pass even if they’re on bikes or other wheels. If you feel like it, you could walk the complete 65km but can make it as long or short as you please. The trail is officially split into three sections (Ngāruawāhia to Hamilton, Hamilton to Cambridge, Cambridge to Karapiro) and then again into sub-sections but there are dozens of entry and exit points.

Te Awa River Ride is dog-friendly the full 65km! But please keep your pooch on the leash and keep an eye out for bikes. It can get pretty busy on the weekend, especially the section that runs through Hamilton. Your furbaby (and yourself) will have heaps to explore as the track meanders through forested sections, past golf courses, suburban houses and farmland.

If you’re looking for a fun, easy walking track walk on the water’s edge that will (probably) take you several outings to walk from start to finish, Te Awa River Trail is a must-go!
