Outside of Turangi, along Desert Road

If you’re looking for an adventurous hike in New Zealand’s North Island, the Mt Urchin Track is a fantastic option. Nestled within the Kaimanawa Forest Park, this track offers stunning views and a moderately challenging climb, perfect for those who love to explore nature.

The trail takes you on a steady climb through a lovely beech forest and then above the treeline to the Urchin Trig, standing at 1391 meters. As you hike the upper section, you’re treated to a fascinating variety of alpine plants and breathtaking views of Lake Taupō and the volcanoes in Tongariro National Park.

The track is well-maintained, the most difficult part is going up and down the scree to get to the peak. Prepare yourself and your pooch for fast-changing weather and very windy conditions.
