Dogs allowed in tents & campers | 2 basic dog-friendly campgrounds | Dogs on leash | No permit needed

Out of nine DOC campsites in the Kauaeranga Valley along the river, two are dog-friendly: Booms Flat Campsite and Hotritori Campsite.

Both campsites are very basic with long drop toilets and no running water (other than the water flowing in Kauaeranga River) and even though you need to make a booking before arrival, you can freely choose your site to set up camp.

There are a number of dog-friendly walks in the area. Best ask the team at the information centre at the entrance to the valley where the best open walks are.
In summer, the water holes in the river are perfect for a cool down for you and your furbaby.

Please note:
Booms Flat Campsite is closed in winter and opens from Labour Weekend. Hotoritori Campground is open year-round.
The weather can be unpredictable in the valley. If there is a risk of flooding, DOC will close the campsites at short notice.

The most famous walk from Kauaeranga Valley, the Pinnacles, is not dog-friendly
