Discover the stunning beauty of the dog-friendly Karangahake Gorge walk by following the popular Hauraki Rail Trail section that runs alongside the Ohinemuri River. Take your time for you and your dog to explore the deep canyon that cuts through the Kaimai Ranges. This unique landscape is home to cascading Owharoa Falls, photogenic gold mining sites and the charmingly old-fashioned Victoria Battery Museum.

The highlight of the trail is a remarkable 1100-metre-long railway tunnel that you can navigate with the aid of a torch or headlamp. Stop by the lovely railway cafe at Waikino Station or take your bike on the vintage train for a 30-minute journey between Waikino and Waihi. For a special experience, time your ride to coincide with the historic train’s timetable. Dogs are even allowed in the open carriage on the train!

The track is shared with other walkers and bikers. Please keep your pooch on the leash at all times.
